Developed by General Dynamics as a multirole fighter aircraft, the F-16C Fighting Falcon stemmed from the US Air Force's need for a lightweight fighter, as the F-15 Eagles proved to be too expensive for mass production. After a fly-off competition between prototypes (YF-16 and YF-17), the former bagged the role and the NATO countries of the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, and Denmark chose the Fighting Falcon to be their official fighter aircraft. Designed with a frameless bubble canopy, the F-16 allowed improved pilot visibility, thanks to its 360-degree view. Reclined seats for the aircraft reduced G-force effects on the pilot were another innovation for the plane. Known for its excellent maneuverability and supersonic speed, the single-engine Fighting Falcon was nicknamed "Viper" by its pilots.
