The T-38 Talon first came about in 1959 being flown by test pilots as a trainer aircraft. It was also used in testing experimental equipment, including electrical and weapon systems. Known for its remarkable design, high performance, and outstanding safety record, this supersonic jet trainer is one of the primary aircraft used by the Air Education and Training Command for joint specialized undergraduate pilot training. The T-38 Talon has also been used by astronauts, as it serves the National Aeronautics and Space Administration fulfilling observer and astronaut training roles. The NASA version features a “glass cockpit†with integrated avionics displays, heads-up display (HUD), and an electronic “no drop bomb†scoring system. The T-38 Talon also serves the Air Combat Command in its companion-training program and the Air Force Materiel Command in the testing of experimental equipment.
